Images of America: Duncan and Stephens County Oklahoma

Pictorial history of Duncan and Stephens County, Oklahoma.

Author: Chris Jefferies, Ph.D. and PeeWee Cary
128 pages. Softcover

Historical images of Oklahoma’s earliest and most productive oil fields, in which Duncan and Stephens County (Oklahoma) played a major role in the development of America’s oil industry. A pictorial retrospective of the area.

Through historic images, this book focuses on the two themes that emerge from the area’s past. Using many images from the archives of the Stephens County Historical Museum, they wanted to represent the community and oil industry and how the two areas affected each other.

First, the settlement, growth, and development of communities with strong, progressive pioneer heritage; and second the discovery of oil in the late teens, and the development of a petroleum industry with a worldwide reach and impact.

Written by Chris Jefferies, Ph.D. and PeeWee Cary.

Our picks for favorite images in this book: Illustration of Duncan Store, a cattle drive cowboy camp and a Fourth of July parade in Duncan, showing the horses making their way through town.

Dr. Jefferies (1939-2014) was the original director (1998-2005) of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, which opened in 1998.
128 pages. Softcover; 1999.
