It’s the first time for the award-winning Cotton County Art Council organization to have an exhibition at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.
Featuring the art of Pattie Calfy, Traci Pennington, Sharon Wiley, Priscilla Pennington, Linda Moore, Lavonne High, LynneAdene Thompson, Michelle Roberts, Judy Brannan, LaMonte Dolman and Bill Boyer. More than 80 pieces are in this show, including oil paintings, sculptures, acrylic paintings, photography, mixed media, canvas prints and prints. There are also 2018 calendars and cards available.
Cotton County Art Council was awarded the Oklahoma Governor’s Arts Award in 2014, yet its history dates back to 1966. On May 3, 1969, the group held its first sidewalk art show in downtown Walters. That show continues as one of southern Oklahoma’s longest running festivals, with exhibitors and tourists attending from Texas and Oklahoma. While many of the members are now retired, but still active within their group and community, over the years, they have made significant contributions. One of those was the restoration of the abandoned railroad depot in Walters, which began in 1984. The Rock Island Train Depot has served as their headquarters since it was finished in 1987, serving as a community center and art center. In 1999, the depot was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
*Inside the depot are frescoes, created by the late Leonard Riddles “Black Moon” who was one of CCAC’s founding members. The Garis Gallery of the American West has one of Riddles paintings in its collection.
