Bison – Ancient. Massive. Wild.
Head on down the road to see us! May 24 – July 28, 2019.

This nationally touring exhibit explores the significance of the bison from pre-history, to their relationship with the Plains Indians, near extinction, and current iconic status. As you visit this exhibit, you explore the significance of bison in the cultures of Plains Indian peoples – particularly as a resource for food, clothing, shelter and tools.

Book your group tours for all ages. Families and small groups always welcome. Open 7 days a week or special hours with advanced request. Educational programming available.

Bison is a North American species whose story stretches from Plains Indian hunters to entrepreneurial industrialists to dedicated conservationists to today’s producers and enthusiasts.

A Texas State of Mind – art of Larry G. Lemons @ Chisholm Trail Heritage Center & Garis Gallery of the American West
Jul 4 – Sep 22 all-day
A Texas State of Mind - art of Larry G. Lemons @ Chisholm Trail Heritage Center & Garis Gallery of the American West

A Texas State of Mind, featuring the art of Larry G. Lemons of Nocona, TX, exhibit will open July 4 – Sept. 22, 2019, at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, OK.

A meet the artist reception will be 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Heritage Center.

As author John Steinbeck said, “Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word.” Lemons created his brand around that quote.

“The icons of Texas and the great southwest make up my artistic arsenal,” Lemons said. “I have taken colorful and iconic images and wrapped them in a package that I call ‘A Texas State of Mind.’ If you look closely, you will see such universal themes as family values, patriotism, faith, humor, nostalgia and maybe more.”

Be sure to like our Facebook event on this show for more information.

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 1–5 p.m. Sunday. For information, call (580) 252-6692.

National Day of the Cowboy

National Day of the Cowboy

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center’s annual National Day of the Cowboy celebration is indoors, all day – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2019.

A nationally-touring exhibit, Bison: Ancient. Massive. Wild, will be available for guests to explore. Children’s games and an art project will be available, made possible with funding from the Oklahoma Arts Council.

On the schedule will be Oklahoma author, Kristi Eaton of Tulsa, who wrote “The Main Streets of Oklahoma: Okie Stories from Every County.” She will have copies of her book available to purchase and autograph.
Pauline Asbury owner of Habasketry, out of Oklahoma City, will demonstrate basket weaving. Her baskets will be available to purchase.
James Stepp from Wichita Buffalo Co. at Sandy Springs Farm in Hinton, will feature his bison jerky and other products.
“A Texas State of Mind” art exhibit, with paintings by Nocona, Texas artist, Larry G. Lemons.
Live music with Allen Wooten and the Cowboys at Heart band, Gaylon Blankenship and Dedra Frye, all from the Comanche Opry. Plenty of chairs are staged so that guests can sit and enjoy the music or dance if they choose. All of these activities for the entire day are happening only at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center.
In 2016, the Heritage Center was awarded the “Cowboy Keeper Award” by the National Day of the Cowboy non-profit organization. The award is given to those who make substantial contributions to the preservation of pioneer heritage and cowboy culture, while inspiring others to do the same. Since 2010, the Heritage Center has been celebrating National Day of the Cowboy with a free admission day. In 2013, Oklahoma state legislators approved a resolution to officially recognize NDOC.
The day is designed so that no matter what time guests choose to attend – morning, mid-day or afternoon, they will be able to enjoy everything planned. For families and individual fun – no matter your age. Visitors can experience the 4D theater, Campfire Theater, the Garis Gallery of the West and all exhibits and activities on this day of free admission.
