National Day of the Cowboy celebration @ Chisholm Trail Heritage Center & Garis Gallery of the American West
Jul 25 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is celebrating National Day of the Cowboy for its 10th year! Saturday, July 25, 2020.

This year’s theme will be Young’Uns on the Trail! We’re adding a Read’em Cowboy Circle – an official National Day of the Cowboy project. Readers throughout the day will promote the cowboy and western/ranching lifestyle. Read’em Cowboy is about promoting literacy and encouraging people of all ages to read and write western literature and cowboy poetry. It goes beyond just the words of the lifestyle, but also includes western cowboy art, photography and music and more.

We’ll have live music thanks to the “Cowboys at Heart” band with Allen Wooten, Gaylon Blankenship and Dedra Frye. They’ve been performing for our event for a few years now.

Children’s author, Una Belle Townsend returns to share her newest book, Ben and the Missing Pony. She’ll also have old favorites such as Grady’s in the Silo and The Oklahoma Land Run. Townsend was here in 2018. She will have books to purchase and autograph.

Art exhibit is The Long Hard Ride: A Commemoration of the Chisholm Trail – by Jim Weaver of Edmond. Weaver is a leather artist and his hide installation will tell the story of the Chisholm Trail.

Children’s art project is funded by the Oklahoma Arts Council.

It’s always the fourth Saturday in July and indoors! There is a free community outreach event.

Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is a Cowboy Keeper Award recipient from the National Day of the Cowboy organization.
