Youth Art Month – Take a Journey Through Art
Mar 1 – Mar 31 all-day

Art by Kyle Lokey

Art by FAME student Kyle Lokey

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center continues its annual spotlight of area high school students in March with the Youth Art Month show. The 2020 nationwide theme is “Take a Journey Through Art. This will be the 10th year for the museum to participate in the national program.

Art is submitted by the teachers on behalf of their students. A public reception will be 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5. All students, their families and other supporters of the program are invited to attend.

Students who are interested in having their work displayed should contact their art teacher. Teachers who would like to submit work can contact Leah Mulkey, CTHC Education Coordinator for details.

There is no cost to the students or schools to participate, or to attend the public reception. Historically, art entries range from 140 to more than 300 pieces of art submitted by more than 100 area art students. Past shows have included mosaics, scratchboard, drawings, collage, paintings and photography. Art teachers are encouraged to follow the theme, but it is not required. If you are a teacher who has never participated in the Heritage Center’s annual show, please contact Leah Mulkey in advance. Space is limited for art display.

Cowboys and Cobbler Throwdown

Cowboys and Cobbler Throwdown is a new event coming to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, Saturday, April 4, 2020. This tasty, fun fundraiser is open to all cowboys, cattle queens, and of course, bakers, youth ages 10-17; and adults, 18 and older.

Bakers must enter their own home-cooked cobbler. Bakers are limited to a maximum of two different cobblers. Dutch oven cobblers, large casserole and deep dish cobblers are all acceptable, but pies will not be accepted. There is no entry fee.

Registration forms due by Friday, March 27. Late registrations will be accepted with a fee of $20, deadline April 2.

Non-monetary prizes to be awarded in four different categories, including a People’s Choice award, for both youth and adults divisions. The cobbler in both youth and adult divisions with the most tickets will win the People’s Choice awards.

Tickets for tasting will be sold for minimum $5 for five samples and $1 for each additional sample to taste.

There will also be ice cream, because, as in the words of Cowboy Mike, “It’s a sin to serve cobbler without ice cream!”

Entertainment throughout the day will include cowboy performer flutist Duane Paul of Duncan | and Two Belles also of Duncan.
A finale 2 hour concert will feature Gary S. Pratt. Jay Snider will emcee this event (which is set for the afternoon 1-5 p.m.) Cobbler entries to be accepted 12:30-1 p.m.  Event kickoff at 1 p.m.

A “Quickdraw Poetry Showcase” provides cowboy poets of all ages a chance to share their best or favorite poem. Only one reading per cowboy poet for the day. This event will be held outside (weather permitting). We are also excited to announce that the Heritage Herd longhorns will be on the property. There will also be some educational activities for families throughout the day.

A complete program of events will be released along with the entry forms March 1.  The forms will be added to the website and available in our front lobby at that time.

For information, contact Leah or Toni at the Heritage Center, (580) 252-6692.

It all happens April 4! Hope you will be a part of this fun day!
