🎨 Art Awaits – Fancy Dancers by Shan Goshorn

Art Awaits: Explore the Hidden Gems of Our Vault

Today, we’re opening our vault with a powerful piece by Shan Goshorn (1957–2018), an Eastern Band Cherokee artist whose work continues to inspire and challenge audiences.

Featured Artwork: Fancy Dancers

Goshorn launched her career in the early 1980s with hand‑colored black‑and‑white photographs, but she never confined herself to a single medium. Though she worked skillfully across photography, painting, silversmithing, glass, and storytelling, she described herself simply as an artist who chose the medium that best expressed the message — often one that addressed human rights issues affecting Native people today.

Born in Baltimore and later based in Tulsa, Goshorn created art that blended beauty, advocacy, and cultural truth. Fancy Dancers reflects her commitment to honoring Native identity while inviting viewers to look deeper.
